Rural Teachers & Community Artists Graduate

On Friday 15th May 14 teachers from rural schools and 7 artists from rural communities will complete their 21 day "Train the Trainee" course in Arts Education for Development and Employment and go back to their communities not only with a certificate but a sufficient proficiency in music, dance and drama to start teaching what CHIPAWO calls Arts Education for Development and Employment. Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Education, Sports, Arts and Culture in the new inclusive government will be the Guest of Honour. The project is being supported by the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe.

LETTER FROM THE AUTHOR

The story about the Participatory Theatre Communications on HIV/AIDS and young women pre-test atttracted a number of encouraging and useful responses. Amongst these was a response from Lutanga Shaba, the author of the book on which the script is based, "Secrets of a Woman's Soul". She is the Director and Founder of the Zimbabwe Women's Trust. PRE-TEST: Young Women Acting Out
There was something I had heard about this school - let's call it Wycombe High School -  back in the 1980s. It was at the time when the ex-A schools in what had previously been the exclusively white suburbs, were slowly losing their character and black children were being admitted in every increasing numbers or being bussed in from the black townships. Almost all the school heads and most of the teachers on the staff were still white.

CHIPAWO is a Zimbabwean Arts Education for Development and Employment TRUST

CHIPAWO works with children from the age of 4, all school-going children, young people and artists. CHIPAWO has work that reaches over 100 centres nation-wide and its activities directly involve over 3000 children from all backgrounds. It's exciting programmes include:

  • gender, child rights, AIDS and poverty reduction

  • disability arts and advocacy, life and career skills, leadership, democracy, psychosocial support

  • musical instrument manufacture, costumes, lighting, sound and décor

  • video, television productions, editing and media training

  • dance, music and theatre performances and playscripts of all kinds by children and young people

  • performing arts and media courses, diplomas and certificates for adults

  • sales, rentals and services
